Bird Wing Tutorial -edit- by arourallis Bird Wing Tutorial -edit- by arourallis
A bird wing tutorial in a slightly simplified, cartoonistic, but still realistic style.
And yes, the mentioned book is any learning artist's bible.
Again, sorry if anything is illegible. This is my actual handwriting. ...
-edit- New and improved! Drawings are more accurate, and now includes a how-to and reference angles.
Edit! Improved art samples!

Could you possibly do references for Owl or Raven wings? :3

All bird wings are made up of the same basic layers, its just the proportions of the feathers and the bones themselves that create the different shapes. There are lots of good photographs here that show the details of owl and raven wings and the shape of each feather. Owl wings are usually smooth and rounded, while raven wings have pointed pinions like a hawk.

Those are tricky to find reference material for, this is what I have found before: wild-soul.deviantart.com/art/F…
Their wings are fairly short, rounded, and very broad, good for quick bursts of flight and moving through trees.

Wonderful! Finally, something simple and easy to follow, but thorough and with great, realistic info! Thank you very much, I think I give birds another shot!

I wonder, could you possibly whip up a folded bird wing tutorial??

Hmm, I can't quite read what's on the sheet, not sure what they're on there for, but I don't mind! I think for better quality you should try tracing them on a new layer in photoshop. The same goes for your other sketches!

Oh dear... I've got nothing on Gimp. If there's something like the magic wand tool, you can turn up the tolerance so you get less white spots areond the linework.

This is fantastic and everything I was looking for :]] Best tutorial I have found. Thank you for breaking down the bird wings in the way that you did, I really see them differently now, and I can tell quite a bit easier when I am making mistakes. :] <3 Much love!
